Bariatric Surgery May Cure Diabetes
Posted by Catholic Health
Two new studies have found that bariatric surgery is reversing diabetes almost instantly.
Dr. Joseph Caruana, who performs bariatric surgery at Sisters Hospital, says, "The results have basically blown the medical management out of the water. We've seen for a number of years patients with diabetes who had basically a cure with weight loss surgery."
Yesterday, a Channel 7 newscast featured Dr. Caruana and his patient Samantha Stuart, who was at risk for diabetes. Samantha decided to have the surgery after struggling to lose weight on her own.
"My whole family was always heavy, and so we would diet together, especially me and my mom," Samantha says. "We tried everything – Weight Watchers, South Beach, everything, really. It would always hit a certain point and then I would stop losing weight."
Dr. Caruana stresses that bariatric surgery isn't an easy fix for weight loss but is a tool for better health. "We've known for quite a long time that this is not cosmetic surgery. This is not an easy way out."
Bariatric surgery is an option for teens and adults with a BMI of 30 or higher.
