A $12.5 million project features a new 24,000 sq. ft. addition

The Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital held a Blessing and Dedication ceremony yesterday for its two new Cardiac Surgical Suites. Housed in a newly-constructed 24,000 square foot, two-story addition, Mercy Hospital’s state-of-the-art Cardiac Surgical Suites are the “heart” of this $12.5 million project to modernize and expand surgical services to support the ongoing growth of the Catholic Health Heart Center.

At 1,058 square feet, the new Cardiac Surgical Suites are more than double the size of the hospital’s existing ORs, which average 450 square feet. The additional space allows equipment to be centered around the surgical field while providing ample area for staff to circulate around the perimeter. This feature results in enhanced safety for both patients and staff. The surgical suites feature new boom mounted gases, monitors, lights and video system, as well as a nurse control desk located in the ORs that controls lighting, image display and video functions. In addition, the project resulted in expanded storage space for Surgical Services on the first floor of the addition, and involved the relocation and creation of a new loading dock for the hospital.

“As a tertiary referral center serving the Western New York region, Mercy Hospital continues to respond to the needs of our community,” said C.J. Urlaub, President and CEO of Mercy Hospital. “This investment in new cardiac surgical suites, equipped with the most advanced technology available, demonstrates our commitment to provide the highest quality patient care.”

The Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital was recognized among U.S. News Report’s Best Hospitals for 2017-18 as a High Performing Hospital for Heart Bypass Surgery. The Heart Center has also earned a distinguished three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures, for the period covering January 2017 to December 2017. The three-star rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places Mercy Hospital among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada.
