Episode 1: The Importance of Vascular Health

The Right Way to Care with Kevin O'Connell

What are the signs of vascular disease? When should I get help?

Left untreated, arterial disease can result in major medical complications, such as heart attack, stroke, and in some cases loss of an affected limb.

Vascular Surgeon Dr. Paul Anain sat down with our Chief of Community Connections, Kevin O’Connell, to discuss symptoms that people should be aware of and the importance of vascular screenings.

We don’t think of ourselves as a last resort, we think of ourselves as vascular medicine. So, we try to treat people before surgery. We try to help them get on the path, so we don’t need to operate.

They should come to see us if they’re having pain in their legs when they walk, which is a sign of blockages in the arteries. Or unfortunately, if their doctors feel a pulsatile mass in their stomach area. Or if they hear a sound in their neck artery, something called a bruit. Those are signs of vascular disease that could be warning signs for a stroke or a ruptured aneurism, or what we call PAD, peripheral arterial disease.
