Episode 11: Rehabilitation Happens at Home

The Right Way to Care with Kevin O'Connell

Do Patients Play an Active Role in Their Own Therapy?

How do some of Western New York’s top healthcare providers define the right way to care? Kevin O’Connell, Chief of Community Connections at Catholic Health, is back to find out. In this episode, he sits down with Jeffrey Castiglione, Manager of Rehabilitation Services at Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus.

Our rehabilitation specialists adopt the care philosophy that though they act as guides, the role the patient plays is of equal importance. This is because the progress made in an outpatient setting is only half of the battle toward a full recovery. “We’re going to guide you, we’re going to do the manual stuff that we need to get in there and work on you with… but you have homework to do,” Castiglione says.¬†

If you’re going to get the full benefits of physical therapy, our occupational therapists, or even our speech therapists, you have stuff that you have to do at home to get yourself better. One of our main educational pieces is that we want to teach you how to keep yourself better, so you don’t have to keep coming back for therapy appointments.¬†
