Episode 13: What Are the Potential Health Risks of Vaping?

The Right Way to Care with Kevin O'Connell

Is Vaping Really a Safer Alternative?

Electronic cigarettes and vapors seem to be a recent phenomenon that’s here to stay. Due to vaping’s relative newness on the market, there hasn’t been a substantial amount of time to conduct medical research into its risk factors and long-term effects. Therefore, many people make the case that vaping offers a healthy alternative to smoking traditional tobacco products.

But what does an experienced vascular surgeon have to say about these claims? “I think they are trying to trick people into thinking it’s safer,” Dr. Paul Anain, vascular surgeon at Sisters of Charity Hospital, tells Kevin O’Connell. Dr. Anain cites “popcorn lung” as one risk associated with vaping, a nickname given to damage in the lungs’ smaller airways.

I think it is a camouflage, that’s a good word for it. I think the amount of nicotine in some of these vapor products is very high, so the people may be getting more nicotine in their bodies, which is the dangerous substance in cigarettes, than they were with actual cigarettes.
