Episode 14: Looking at the Future of Neurosurgery

The Right Way to Care with Kevin O'Connell

What Will a Neurosurgeon’s Legacy Be?

On this episode of The Right Way to Care, Kevin O’Connell asks Dr. Gregory Castiglia, Neurosurgeon at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, to anticipate the direction that his medical field is heading in. “The talent is there, the expectation is what’s hard,” says Dr. Castiglia about the next generation of neurosurgeons. He recognizes his own role in building a program at Mercy that’s going to continue to pave the way for success in brain surgery and spinal procedures.

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo demonstrates a commitment to investing in state-of-the art technology to match the abilities of its physicians. Notably, a recent development has been the integration of the CT scanner and The Brain Lab system in the OR, which allows neurosurgeons to perform a CAT scan in the middle of a procedure to track their progress. This optimizes both time and margin of safety while neurosurgeons are in the operating room.

If we were to have this conversation in six months, they’ll be new things on the horizon that we’re not privy to right now, and that’s what’s exciting. I think going forward, we’re going to continue to build on our strengths, and we’re going to continue to build on the excitement that’s been generated here in this hospital. And hopefully that will carry over into the rest of the Western New York community.

Gregory Castiglia, MD
