Episode 9: What’s the Biggest Factor Affecting Our Heart Health?

The Right Way to Care with Kevin O'Connell

The Biggest Factor Affecting Our Heart Health

Many of us may already know it – but Dr. Stephen Downing, Chairman of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Mercy Hospital, believes that people still don’t understand just how much smoking affects overall health and wellness.

Kevin O’Connell listens as Dr. Downing explains how many of his patients seem to understand that smoking can lead to lung cancer. However, they fail to realize just how much smoking impacts heart disease and arterial blockages, medical conditions that account for some of the leading causes of death in the United States year after year.

Family members and loved ones of cardiac patients should examine their own habits, and consider taking the first step to quitting. Resources, like our Smoking Cessation program, can help.

I think it’s easier for people to see the connection between smoking and lung cancer, because something’s going into your lungs and then your lungs get cancer – that seems more obvious to people. But smoking’s bigger problem is actually how much artery disease it causes, and that’s a harder thing for people to put together in their head. I think it’s just a matter of, keep hammering away at the topic so people understand what they’re doing to themselves.
