Mount St. Mary’s Hospital is taking its surgical program to the next level with the addition of the latest innovation in robotic surgery – the da Vinci Xi surgical system. The $1.5 million Xi model is the hospital’s latest clinical investment, providing doctors with the most cutting-edge robotic surgery equipment available today to optimize the most complex surgical cases.

“This upgrade of our da Vinci system will significantly enhance our Surgery Department,” said Amy Vanone, RN, BSN, Assistant Director of Perioperative Services at Mount St. Mary’s. “Several of our surgeons are skilled in a variety of gynecologic, urologic, and general surgery procedures using da Vinci technology, and this state-of-the-art model will support them even further, while also providing our patients with superior surgical care.”

Enhancing Surgical Care at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital

The da Vinci system is comprised of three instruments: the surgeon console provides the surgeon with highly magnified, three-dimensional images of the surgical area and agile hand controls that direct the robotic instruments with exact precision; the four-armed robotic unit, which contains the slender surgical instruments controlled by the surgeon console; and the vision cart, which supports the latest 3DHD vision system.

Though the components of the system appear similar to previous models, the advancements of the Xi model are unparalleled; improvements in the model’s technology delivers increased efficiency, enhanced ease of use and maximized capabilities. These advancements translate to reduced recovery times and improved clinical outcomes for patients.

“Last year’s introduction of the da Vinci system at Mount St. Mary’s expanded our surgical competencies, enabling our team to redefine the standard of surgical care for patients,” said CJ Urlaub, Hospital President and Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, Integration & Care Delivery-Niagara County. “Catholic Health’s investment in this upgraded robotic surgical system puts Mount St. Mary’s at the forefront of robotic surgery in Niagara County.”

Mount St. Mary’s first acquired a da Vinci robot from Eastern Niagara Hospital in March 2021 following the closure of its hospital-based surgery department. Over 100 robotic surgeries have been performed at Mount St. Mary’s since commencing the robotics program, and that number is expected to grow significantly as a result of the Xi upgrade.
