What is GYN Surgery?

Minimally invasive gynecological (GYN) surgery can treat a wide variety of conditions. Sometimes, gynecological surgery is recommended for further evaluation of a condition, or to treat conditions that affect the organs in the female pelvic region. Though surgery may sound scary, these procedures are common and are performed on millions of women each year.

What Conditions does Gynecological Surgery Treat?

Gynecological surgery treats conditions affecting the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. These procedures can help with diagnosis, relieving pain or incontinence problems, or remove a cancerous tumor. Many of these surgeries are done laparoscopically, meaning the doctor uses a laparoscope to look inside the body without making large incisions, or any at all.

Your doctor may recommend gynecological surgery if you have one of the following conditions:

Minimally invasive GYN surgery is also used to perform biopsies. Biopsies are minor operations in which your doctor removes a small sample of tissue to test for cancer or other conditions. If cancer is detected or if you are at high risk of gynecological cancer, your doctor may recommend GYN surgery to remove the ovaries (oophorectomy) or uterus (hysterectomy) as a preventative measure or treatment option.
