The New York State Department of Health named Mercy Nursing Facility a “Top Performing Nursing Home” as part of its Nursing Home Quality Initiative (NHQI). Only 40 nursing homes out of the more than 600 in New York State received this designation.

The NHQI is an annual quality and performance evaluation project designed to improve care to residents in Medicaid-certified nursing homes across New York State. Nursing homes are awarded points for performance measures in the components of Quality, Compliance and Efficiency.
The scores are divided into five equal quintiles, with the top quintile representing the top-performing facilities. To be considered a “Top Performing Nursing Home,” a facility needs to be in the first quintile for at least three consecutive years.

“This designation represents the tremendous commitment to excellence by our entire Mercy Nursing Facility team,” said Pat O’Connor, Catholic Health Vice President of Operations for Long Term Care and Administrator of Mercy Nursing Facility. “Their hard work is the reason why Mercy Nursing Facility consistently rates as one of the best long term care facilities in Western New York.”

In an effort to reward high-quality care, the Department of Health developed the NHQI as part of the 2010-2011 State Budget. The DOH works with industry experts to design and compute an equitable quality scoring system using existing data sources.
