Catholic Health received the region’s highest overall safety scores in the Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade Report for spring 2022. Kenmore Mercy received its 17th consecutive “A,” the most in New York State, while Sisters of Charity Hospital increased from a “B” to an “A” since last fall’s report. This national distinction recognizes Kenmore Mercy’s and Sisters Hospital’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm.

“We work hard every day to provide patients throughout Catholic Health with safe, high quality care and are proud to receive the only ‘A’ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades in Western New York,” said Hans Cassagnol, MD, MMM, Executive Vice President & Chief Physician Executive for Catholic Health.

“Kenmore Mercy’s caregivers should be commended for a consistent accomplishment held by few hospitals and the Sisters team for their improvement efforts,” Dr. Cassagnol continued. “Our Quality & Patient Safety team and caregivers continue to look for opportunities to achieve this recognition at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, which is well within reach.” Mercy Hospital improved from a “C” to a “B” and Mount St. Mary’s maintained a “C” Safety Grade in the spring report.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization that awards “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” safety grades to hospitals across the country based on more than thirty performance measures reflecting medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Catholic Health for its sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “‘A’ Safety Grades are an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire healthcare workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”
