Joy Massaro and her late husband Dominick, a successful construction professional, started giving back to the community from the day they were married. Mount St. Mary’s continues to enjoy their support as Joy carries on the couple’s generosity. Joy shares why this is the right way to care for her.
What is your relationship with Mount St. Mary’s Hospital?
As lifelong residents of the area, my husband and I always gave to various organizations to support the community where we live. Mount St. Mary’s became a priority because it is our hospital in Lewiston – we attended their annual gala and made regular donations for nearly two decades.
What or who inspired you to make your first gift?
Our family has gone to Mount St. Mary’s for different things over the years, never anything serious, and we have seen the remarkable care provided by the staff. In fact, I recently made a donation in honor of Dr. Samuel Sirianni, a primary care specialist at the hospital. I cannot say enough about him and the caring way he treats his patients. He’s the type of professional who inspires me to give.
Why do you personally feel it is important to support the foundation?
This is our community hospital and they need our help, especially during the challenges of the recent pandemic. Mount St. Mary’s Foundation is among my most important donations each year. The hospital is here for us and we should be there for them.
What do you hope to achieve with your gift?
I have directed my support to the maternity department and the Neighborhood Health Center in the past, but I typically designate my donation as unrestricted so the Foundation can use it where it is needed most.
What is your message to others who are considering a gift to the hospital?
I would encourage gifts to the Mount St. Mary’s Foundation because they support the entire hospital and are always focused on what is best for the patients. You can have confidence in their stewardship guided by the mission of compassionate, high quality health care.
