Discover how to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Your summer vacation plans are in place, and if you’re like many Americans, you’re heading to a beach, a lake or a park to soak in some sunshine, enjoy the fresh air and unwind from your hectic routine. You know it’s important to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, so you wonder if you should consider hitting the tanning salon before you pack your bags to avoid getting burned.

There are many myths surrounding what’s safe – and what’s not – when it comes to your skin. Take our quiz to discover how to keep your skin healthier this summer.

1. Getting a base tan helps protect you from sunburn.

False

There’s little evidence to support the idea that a base tan protects you from getting sunburned. In fact, that base tan you get is actually a sign of skin damage. So if you head to a tanning salon and expose your skin to UV light, you’re damaging your skin. Then if you go out in the sun and don’t protect your skin as much as you would otherwise because you don’t think you’ll get burned, you do double the damage.

2. Tanning beds are safer than tanning outdoors.
True

False

It doesn’t matter whether you get your tan from a tanning bed or the sun. Exposure to UV radiation damages your skin, increases your risk of skin cancer and causes premature aging. Tanning beds are not regulated by the FDA and may emit UVA rays that are up to 3 times more intense than natural sunlight.

3. Using a tanning bed only once can increase your risk of melanoma.
True

According to research, using tanning beds before age 35 can increase your risk of melanoma by 59%. Even just one use can increase your risk by 20% and the risk increases with each use. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.
