As a union carpenter, I worked on major projects throughout Western New York, including the expansion of the St. Joseph Campus of Sisters Hospital in Cheektowaga. I never thought I would be a patient there.

Years of carpentry work, most notably what we called the “hip launch” in carrying and placing sheets of drywall, had taken a toll. I think all that hip launching led to my hip pain. My primary physician told me I would need a total hip replacement. I was referred to work with orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Michael Ostempowski, and it was like speaking with someone I’ve known my whole life.

Dr. Ostempowski immediately put me at ease, and I could sense his confidence and expertise. He performed the surgery in September, and I was home the same day! I was blown away by the care and service provided by the doctor and everyone at St. Joe’s. That high level of care continued with Joseph Baumgarden, a home care physical therapist at Catholic Health. He worked with me in my home a couple of times a week and helped speed my recovery.

Now retired, I enjoy hunting and other activities at my home in Niagara County. I have a great quality of life thanks to the success of my hip replacement. That is why I want to recognize Dr. Ostempowski and Joe Baumgarden, PT.
